Book The Black Girl's Guide To Being Blissfully Feminine Review :

I really liked her other book Lady in Waiting and recommend me over this book. I was excited for this book because it was written for black women or was it? It read more of a critique of black women who are unaware they are not feminine with little context to support the critique of why black women are not feminine but we cannot paint black women with a broad stroke so it is black American women with the issue.I liked the quotes, some good tips and her sharing her story -- it was unfortunate she had to go through so much but at least she is helping other women in her journey. My issue is the book reads as a "pick-me" book not a purpose book to really guide black girls through femininity which they really need now more than ever! I also did not like the anti-black American/ADOS tone it takes as if black Americans lack culture completely so we must tie ourselves to other cultural identities to feel validated or desired. She claimed there was NO proof of black women's obesity/weight issues being tied to the idea that black women just have larger bones. Well actually there is scientific evidence which proves black women can have higher BMIs than white women and not be affected in the same way, it was a study done a few years ago by a university. I don't say that as a larger person, I'm a size 8 personally but I know I weigh more than other people my size because I am endomorphic. And yes it is scientifically proven black women do have more muscle mass. This is not to dismiss the diet needs to improve for black women--I agree on that but many urban communities are deprived of healthy foods if the truth is told. And to say Latinx women keep their bodies up for their men when they are narrowly behind us with being the most obese/overweight women in the US...so please stop. Many of the women have plastic surgery done to have the slim-curvy look.Perhaps projecting a bit much her own insecurities or escapism of a negative black American culture which was not loving. Sorry but that simply was NOT my experience. Black people in my family and even outside of my family are the most affectionate people just as much as Latinx families. I saw feminine and glamorous women in my family especially the elders like my grandmother and her sisters. I also grew up in a two-parent home but who can say a someone in a single parent home cannot learn to be feminine! The internet is teaching MILLIONS of black girls and women daily a variety of things including how to be more feminine like Chrissie on youtube (I don't agree with her on everything but she is doing more to improve the images of black woman especially darker skinned women). Btw, Latinx people can also be black. What was a projection and somewhat micro-aggressive could have easily could have been an opportunity to explain or led to a greater context of the very real challenges black women face as it relates to body image, colorism, self-hate and the option of interracial dating. It was a missed opportunity for black girls and women to actually understand the true purpose of femininity. Femininity of the essence of womanhood, it is energy, it is alluring and peaceful. Nothing about it begins or ends with a man...by default a man is drawn to a feminine woman if he is actually masculine in a healthy way. Nothing about feminine energy compares or contrasts, it is not a competition. It is definitely is not a PICK-ME! Pick-me's are using masculine energy but doing feminine tasks thinking it will charm men--wrong way to go about it...
While I found a lot of useful information in this book and would recommend to other bw I was concerned about the lack of context. Telling bw to be feminine also requires the reminder that this should be done in safe places. Many black women aren't living in environments that are SAFE for them to be feminine. Being feminine in these hostile environments could actually be dangerous. I wish the author would have discussed that more and encouraged bw to really change their environments to flourish as feminine women. Women who can be girly, loving, and open in nurturing communities.
